What Is ESG Reporting and Why Does It Matter for Packaging?

ESG reporting — encompassing Environmental, Social, and Governance performance — has become a critical differentiator in the global packaging manufacturing industry. For brand clients in FMCG, cosmetics, and consumer electronics, partnering with an ESG packaging manufacturer that holds internationally recognized certifications like EcoVadis Gold and CDP A List is no longer optional — it is essential for meeting upstream Scope 3 carbon accounting requirements, satisfying regulatory compliance, and building consumer trust in sustainable products. ZRP’s 2025 report is the company’s most transparent disclosure yet, structured across four dimensions: Governance Foundation, Green Pathway, Responsibility Chain, and Shared Benefits.

Governance: A Robust ESG Governance Foundation

ZRP has established a well-defined corporate governance architecture underpinned by a board of directors with four specialized committees — Strategy, Nomination, Compensation & Assessment, and Audit. In 2025, the board convened seven meetings, with three independent directors and two female directors ensuring diverse perspectives in decision-making. The company disclosed 64 public announcements and maintained a 100% response rate on investor Q&A platforms.

On risk management, ZRP operates a “three lines of defense” internal control system and conducted seven internal audits in 2025. Information security investment totaled RMB 300,000, with 100% of employees signing data protection commitments and receiving an average of nine hours of information security training. In business ethics, 100% of employees and suppliers signed integrity agreements, and the Kunshan base achieved ISO 37001 anti-bribery management system certification.

Green Pathway: Carbon Reduction, Renewable Energy, and Circular Economy

Climate Action & Carbon Reduction

ZRP has established a greenhouse gas inventory system aligned with ISO 14064-1 standards, systematically measuring and managing emissions across its manufacturing footprint. The company has identified climate-related risks — including physical risks and policy/legal risks — and developed corresponding mitigation strategies. As a CDP A List packaging company, ZRP continues to strengthen its carbon management capabilities, laying the groundwork for future quantitative carbon reduction targets.

In energy management, ZRP consumed 8,157,053 kWh of renewable energy — predominantly from solar photovoltaic installations — alongside 96,329,420 kWh of purchased electricity across its manufacturing bases. Key energy-saving projects include a ground-source heat pump system at the Tianjin base and air compressor waste-heat recovery at the Zhongshan headquarters.

Water Stewardship

ZRP withdrew 406,413.84 tons of water in 2025, of which 215,087.00 tons was process water and 191,326.84 tons was domestic water. The company employs multiple water conservation measures — including wash-water recycling, air-conditioning condensate recovery, concentrated water reuse, and rainwater harvesting. At the Zhongshan base alone, air-conditioning condensate recovery saves over 41,000 cubic meters of water annually.

Waste Management & Circular Economy

ZRP generated 756.85 tons of hazardous waste and 35,165.19 tons of general waste, all managed in full compliance with environmental regulations. VOCs emissions totaled 11.10 tons and wastewater COD emissions reached 6.53 tons — both meeting discharge standards.

In circular economy packaging, ZRP has embedded recycling across its operations. (explore our circular economy initiatives) The Kunshan base achieves 100% pallet recycling, recovering approximately 150 tons annually. At Zhongshan, 19,260 tons of waste paper were recycled — enough to substitute roughly 23,000 tons of virgin pulp. The company also deploys reusable containers (plastic bins and pallets) to minimize single-use packaging waste. Zhongshan base was recognized as the city’s first “Zero-Waste Factory” demonstration unit.

Responsibility Chain: Innovation, Quality, and Green Supply Chain

R&D Innovation in Sustainable Packaging

With RMB 127.73 million invested in R&D during 2025 (4.13% of revenue), ZRP sustains one of the most ambitious packaging innovation pipelines in the industry. (view our paper packaging solutions) The company’s “1+6+N” R&D system and “1+1+N” creative design framework have delivered breakthroughs in biobased materials, digital proofing technologies, and an AI-powered intelligent packaging design platform. By year-end, ZRP held 50 invention patents, 394 utility model patents, and 27 design patents — with 12 new invention patents and 32 utility models added in 2025 alone.

Quality Excellence & Customer Trust

ZRP’s quality management system — certified under ISO 9001 and BRC — delivered a 99.7% product pass rate with zero major quality incidents. The company’s “San Pan” total quality management model drove a ~15% increase in unit-hour output for printing and die-cutting processes, and a ~10% improvement for gluing. Customer satisfaction reached 96.1 points across 358 valid survey responses, with a 100% complaint resolution rate and zero client privacy breaches.

Green Supply Chain Sustainability

ZRP manages 1,056 suppliers, with 100% ESG clause signing and 681 suppliers holding formal ESG certifications. Demonstrating leadership in supply chain sustainability, the company engaged 9 core suppliers in carbon inventory programs during 2025, supported 13 suppliers in completing product carbon footprint assessments, and onboarded 3 ISCC-certified film material suppliers. Both the Zhongshan and Kunshan bases hold EcoVadis Gold Medal ratings, while the Tianjin base achieved Silver.

Beyond its own operations, ZRP actively contributes to industry standards — the company has led or co-authored 15 national and industry standards spanning green printing and smart manufacturing, and is a member of the China Packaging Federation and other leading industry associations.

Shared Benefits: People, Safety, and Community

Our People

As of December 31, 2025, ZRP employed 4,108 people, of whom 35% were women. The company maintains 100% labor contract coverage and 100% employee grievance resolution. An organization-wide engagement survey — covering all eligible employees of non-newly-acquired domestic subsidiaries — yielded an average engagement score exceeding 87 out of 100.

In talent development, ZRP delivered 326 training sessions totaling 23,170 hours — achieving 100% employee training coverage. Structured career development pathways include the “Rong Shi” management track and “Rong Gan” professional/technical track, complemented by tiered leadership development programs. Total training investment was RMB 272,500.

Health, Safety & Wellbeing

ZRP achieved its zero occupational disease, zero workplace fatality, and zero major infectious disease targets for 2025. Occupational health and safety training reached 106,172 person-sessions, and 39 emergency drills involved 5,976 participants. The company recorded 18 non-fatal occupational injuries (641 lost workdays) and maintains 100% work-injury insurance coverage — with a recognized need to expand safety liability insurance coverage going forward.

Community Engagement

ZRP invested approximately RMB 289,000 in social contributions during 2025, including RMB 203,000 in charitable donations supporting local education, community services, and green development initiatives. An additional RMB 86,000 funded community infrastructure repairs, directly benefiting 5,295 residents.

Looking Ahead: A Clearer Path to Net-Zero Packaging

ZRP’s 2025 Sustainability Report marks a significant step forward in transparency, but it also signals clear ambition for what comes next. As downstream brand clients face tightening carbon regulations — including expanded carbon market coverage and increasingly stringent Scope 3 requirements — ZRP is actively strengthening its carbon management framework and supply chain carbon accounting depth. Quantitative carbon reduction targets, Scope 3 emissions measurement, and enhanced safety liability insurance coverage are among the next-phase priorities.

With EcoVadis Gold (top 5% globally), CDP A List, and multiple green factory certifications already in place, ZRP is uniquely positioned to help global brands meet their sustainability commitments through low-carbon packaging solutions (explore our sustainability program). As a responsible paper packaging manufacturer and ESG leader in China’s packaging industry, ZRP will continue to align business growth with environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and strong governance — delivering measurable value for clients, investors, and communities alike.
